The UAE now offers more residency routes than at any point in its history, from two-year employment visas to ten-year Golden Visas and self-sponsored options for freelancers, retirees and remote workers. Choosing the right one affects cost, renewal frequency, family sponsorship rights and how tied you are to a single employer or company.

This guide sets out every major route, who qualifies, how long each lasts, and the practical trade-offs between them.

Employment visa

The most common route. The employer sponsors the visa, registers a labour contract with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation or the relevant free zone authority, and pays salaries through the Wages Protection System. Validity is two years and renewal is tied to continued employment.

Job mobility has improved considerably: transfers between employers no longer require a no-objection certificate in most cases, though notice-period and contract terms still apply.

Investor and partner visa

Issued to shareholders of a UAE company on the strength of their shareholding, usually for two years and renewable while the licence remains active. It allows self-sponsorship through your own entity and family sponsorship once the Emirates ID is issued.

Golden and Green visas

The Golden Visa grants five or ten years of self-sponsored residence to qualifying investors, entrepreneurs, specialised talent, outstanding students and certain professionals. It is not tied to an employer, and holders can stay outside the UAE for extended periods without the visa lapsing.

The Green Visa offers five years of self-sponsorship for skilled employees meeting salary and qualification criteria, freelancers with a permit and documented income, and investors below Golden Visa thresholds. Both allow family sponsorship on more generous terms than a standard employment visa.

  • Golden Visa: property investment from AED 2 million, or capital, talent and specialist categories
  • Green Visa: skilled workers with a bachelor's degree and salary from AED 15,000, or qualifying freelancers
  • Both permit self-sponsorship without an employer or company licence

Freelance and remote work visas

A freelance permit from a free zone licenses an individual professional and supports a two-year residence visa at a fraction of the cost of a company setup. It suits consultants, creatives and technology professionals invoicing in their own name.

The remote work visa allows a person employed by a company outside the UAE to live in the country for one year while working for that foreign employer, subject to a minimum monthly salary, valid employment contract and health insurance.

Retirement and student visas

The retirement visa gives five years of residence to applicants aged fifty-five and over who meet one of several criteria: property ownership, savings held in a UAE bank, or documented monthly income.

Student visas are sponsored by the educational institution or by a resident parent and are renewed annually against proof of enrolment.

The common process

  • Entry permit issued by the sponsoring party or the ICP
  • Status change inside the country, or entry on the permit
  • Medical fitness test for applicants aged eighteen and above
  • Emirates ID biometrics
  • Residence visa issuance and Emirates ID delivery
  • Health insurance activation, mandatory before issuance

Choosing the right route

If you are building a company in the UAE, the investor visa is usually the fastest and cheapest starting point, with a Golden Visa applied for later once thresholds are met. Employees should confirm whether their salary and qualifications support a Green Visa, which removes dependence on a single employer.

Freelancers and remote workers should compare the total cost of a freelance permit plus visa against a lean free zone licence, which may cost only slightly more while creating a limited-liability entity that can invoice corporate clients and sponsor staff.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What is the easiest way to get UAE residency?

An employment visa if you have a job offer, or an investor visa through your own free zone company, which can be completed in one to three weeks.

How long is a UAE residence visa valid?

Two years for employment and most investor visas, three years in some free zones, five years for Green and retirement visas, and five or ten years for the Golden Visa.

Can I sponsor myself in the UAE?

Yes, through an investor visa on your own company, a Golden Visa, a Green Visa, a freelance permit visa or a retirement visa.

Does UAE residency require a medical test?

Yes, for applicants aged eighteen and above — a blood test and chest X-ray at an approved centre.

How long can I stay outside the UAE without losing residency?

Standard residence visas generally lapse after six consecutive months abroad. Golden Visa holders are not subject to that restriction.

Is health insurance mandatory for residency?

Yes. A policy meeting the emirate's minimum benefit level must be active before the residence visa is issued.

Can I work for another company on my investor visa?

Not without the correct permit. Employment for a third party requires a labour contract and the appropriate work permit.

Which residency route is best for a family?

Golden and Green visas offer the longest validity and the most flexible family sponsorship terms; the investor visa is the fastest practical starting point for business owners.
