Because attestation failures are the leading cause of delay, it is worth treating the document package as a compliance exercise rather than paperwork. Every foreign civil document must carry an unbroken attestation chain before MoFA in the UAE will accept it, and Arabic translation must be completed by a translator licensed in the UAE, not a general translation service.

Dubai residents apply through the GDRFA smart app or website (GDRFA Dubai); residents of Abu Dhabi and the other emirates apply through the ICP's smart services platform (ICP UAE or the Federal Authority app). Both authorities follow broadly the same sequence, though screen names and fee schedules differ slightly.

The medical fitness test is conducted at an approved government health centre (Dubai Health Authority centres in Dubai, or the equivalent federal health screening centres elsewhere) and screens for communicable diseases, principally tuberculosis and HIV, along with a general fitness check. Results are typically issued within 24 to 48 hours and are valid for a limited period, usually around 30 days, within which the visa stamping must be completed.

A failed medical result halts the sponsorship application; in the case of a communicable disease finding, the applicant will be required to leave the country rather than be granted residency, and the case is reported to the relevant health authority. This is uncommon for spouses and children but is a real risk factor for older parents, so it is worth having the applicant undergo an equivalent check before travelling where practical.

Emirates ID biometrics — fingerprints, photograph and signature — are captured at the same visit or a linked appointment. The physical Emirates ID card is normally issued within five to ten working days and is required for virtually every subsequent transaction: opening a bank account, enrolling in school, registering a SIM card, and renewing the visa itself.

Health insurance requirements by dependant type

Insurance is assessed against the minimum benefits schedule for the emirate of residence — the Dubai Health Authority's Basic scheme benchmark in Dubai, and the Thiqa/Daman-linked minimum in Abu Dhabi. A policy that falls below the minimum annual limit or excludes maternity or emergency cover where required will be rejected at the visa stamping stage even if every other document is in order.

Realistic timelines

For a dependant already inside the UAE on a valid visit visa with fully attested documents ready, a status change to residence can be completed in seven to twelve working days. For a dependant applying from abroad, add the time to obtain the entry permit, travel, and complete the in-country steps — typically a further one to three weeks depending on the embassy attestation queue in the home country.

Attestation is usually the longest single step and the one most within the applicant's control to plan for. Home-country ministry attestation and UAE embassy legalisation can each take from a few days to several weeks depending on the country, so it is worth beginning this process as soon as the marriage or birth certificate is issued rather than waiting until relocation is imminent.

Renewal, cancellation and common rejections

Dependant visas renew on the sponsor's cycle and must be renewed within thirty days of expiry to avoid overstay fines, which typically accrue at around AED 50 per day after the grace period. Renewal repeats the core conditions check — income, Ejari tenancy, insurance — so a lapsed tenancy contract or an insurance policy that has not been renewed will block the renewal even where the family relationship has not changed.

If the sponsor's own visa is cancelled — through resignation, termination or company closure — dependants' visas are cancelled at the same time or shortly after, and a grace period (commonly 30 days, occasionally up to 90 days for some visa categories) applies before the family must exit the country, transfer to a new sponsor, or convert to an independent visa such as employment or the Golden Visa.

The most common rejection reasons are: missing embassy or MoFA attestation on a foreign civil document; a tenancy contract that is not Ejari-registered or is registered in a name other than the sponsor's; insufficient or undocumented income, particularly for self-employed sponsors relying on inconsistent bank deposits; insurance that does not meet the emirate's minimum benefit level; and, for parents, failure to sponsor both parents together without an accepted justification.

  • Renew at least 30 days before expiry to avoid daily overstay fines
  • Keep the Ejari tenancy contract active for the full visa validity, not just at application
  • Confirm the insurance policy's coverage dates run past the intended visa validity
  • Retain original attested documents; copies alone are not accepted for first-time sponsorship

Special cases: divorce, widowhood and domestic workers

A divorced or widowed woman previously sponsored as a spouse can, in most emirates, retain residency on her own visa for a defined period after the divorce or the husband's death, or transfer sponsorship to an adult son, an employer, or her own employment. This must be actioned before the original sponsor's visa is cancelled to avoid a gap in legal residency.

Domestic helpers such as nannies, drivers and housekeepers follow a separate sponsorship track under MOHRE and the Tadbeer domestic worker centres rather than the family dependant process described here, with their own salary, contract and insurance requirements. Families sponsoring domestic staff should not conflate this with dependant sponsorship, as the fee structure, minimum salary declaration and contract terms differ materially.

How IDOS handles family visa sponsorship

IDOS manages family visa files end to end: verifying the sponsor's income and Ejari documentation before submission, coordinating attestation of marriage and birth certificates through the correct embassy and MoFA channels, booking medical appointments and Emirates ID biometrics, and tracking renewal dates so dependant visas never lapse into an overstay position.

For clients relocating with parents or older dependants, IDOS also compares insurance providers against the emirate's minimum benefit schedule before purchase, since a policy bought without that check is the single most frequent cause of a rejected visa stamping appointment.
