Dubai's licensing authorities are fast; the parts that take time are documentation, external approvals and bank compliance. Knowing the real sequence lets you plan hiring, contracts and cashflow around it.

The timeline below assumes a standard trading or consultancy company with two shareholders and no regulated activity.

Week 1 — Structure and name reservation

  • Consultation, jurisdiction recommendation and full cost quotation (1–2 days)
  • Trade name reservation, with alternatives prepared in case of rejection (1–2 days)
  • Initial approval from the authority (1–3 days)

Week 2 — Documentation and licence issuance

  • MOA drafting and notarisation, or free zone incorporation signing (1–3 days)
  • Office lease and Ejari registration for mainland, or flexi-desk allocation for free zone
  • Licence issued: 3–7 working days free zone, 5–10 working days mainland

Week 3 — Establishment card and visa quota

  • Establishment (immigration) card: 3–5 working days
  • Labour and immigration file activation
  • Entry permit for shareholders or employees outside the UAE: 3–7 working days

Weeks 4–5 — Status change, medical and Emirates ID

  • Status change if the applicant is already inside the UAE (1–2 days)
  • Medical fitness test, results in 2–4 working days (express options available)
  • Emirates ID biometrics and issuance: 5–10 working days
  • Visa stamping on the passport: 3–5 working days

Weeks 4–10 — Corporate bank account

Banking runs in parallel with visas and is the least predictable stage. Application preparation takes a few days; compliance review takes two to six weeks depending on the bank, shareholder nationalities and the clarity of the business model.

Files move fastest when the bank receives a clear activity description, supplier and customer contracts, source-of-funds evidence and a resident signatory holding an Emirates ID.

Where timelines usually slip

  • Trade name rejected for using restricted words or an unregistered brand
  • Degree certificates not attested by the UAE embassy in the country of issue
  • Regulated activity requiring approval from an external authority
  • Shareholder outside the UAE when a signature or biometric is required
  • Bank compliance queries answered slowly or with incomplete documents

الأسئلة الشائعة

How fast can I get a trade licence in Dubai?

Some free zones issue a licence within 24 to 72 hours for straightforward activities when all documents are ready. Five to seven working days is a safer plan.

How long until I can start invoicing?

As soon as the licence is issued. A bank account is not required to sign contracts, though most clients expect a corporate account for payment.

How long does the whole process take end to end?

Licence to Emirates ID typically runs four to six weeks. Add two to six weeks in parallel for a corporate bank account.

Can steps be run at the same time?

Yes. Bank preparation, office setup and visa applications overlap. Only the licence and establishment card are strictly sequential.

Does the process pause during holidays?

Government offices close on public holidays and operate reduced hours during Ramadan, which can add several days to any stage.

Is express processing available?

Many stages offer paid express options — medical tests, Emirates ID and some licensing services — which can compress the timeline by roughly a week.

Do I need to be in Dubai the whole time?

No. Most founders travel in once for medical, biometrics and the bank meeting, then handle the rest remotely through their advisor.

What delays a bank account the most?

An unclear business model, no UAE-resident signatory, and shareholders from higher-risk jurisdictions without supporting documentation.
